Kim McMechan (Mick-meck-in)
The first song Kim ever wrote was about a cat walking in the rain. She was six. (Her melancholic streak showed itself early in life.)
At the age of ten, she started a pop group with three other neighbourhood kids. Their first cover song was “We’re The Kids Of America” even though they were all Canadians. The group lasted a few short days before the other three members lost interest and went back to watching re-runs of Three’s Company.
From 1999 to 2002, Kim wrote and recorded several songs on four compilation albums with a (now defunct) label called VMC. The albums went on to collectively sell nearly 90,000 copies worldwide. IN 2006, she released her first solo recording, Little Grey House, a collection of nine tiny songs written in her old grey house in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
“I grew up listening to a lot of John Denver and other mainstream folkies. I used to lay on the green shag carpet in front of the speakers and let the music move me to tears. I thought: One day, I want to make music that moves people.”
Her well-crafted songs and moving performances have won her multiple awards. Also a poet, essayist, photographer and creative teacher, she currently makes her home in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. Her most recent recording, Paper Sun, was produced by Colin Linden (Bruce Cockburn, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings) and many of the songs on the album can be heard frequently on CBC Radio.
